Computational methods for fracture in rock: a review and recent advances

Ali JENABIDEHKORDI

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2019, Volume 13, Issue 2,   Pages 273-287 doi: 10.1007/s11709-018-0459-5

Abstract: We present an overview of the most popular state-of-the-art computational methods available for modelling fracture in rock. The summarized numerical methods can be classified into three categories: Continuum Based Methods, Discrete Crack Approaches, and Block-Based Methods. We will not only provide an extensive review of those methods which can be found elsewhere but particularly address their potential in modelling fracture in rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering. In this context, we will discuss their key applications, assumptions, and limitations. Furthermore, we also address ‘general’ difficulties that may arise for simulating fracture in rock and fractured rock. This review will conclude with some final remarks and future challenges.

WEN Bangchun

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2008, Volume 3, Issue 1,   Pages 1-9 doi: 10.1007/s11465-008-0017-2

Abstract: The utilization of vibration and wave, which was developed during the latter half of the 20th century, is one of the most valueable technology applications and has been rapidly developing recently . Because the technique is closely associated with industry and agriculture, it can create huge social and economical benefits and provide excellent services for society. Thus, due to its necessity in industry and daily life, extensive research has been devoted to vibration utillization engineering. In this paper, vibration utilization is classified into linear or non-linear vibrations, waves, and electric-magnetic oscillations. Their phenomena, patterns, and applications in nature and society are introduced. Some research results about vibration utilization engineering are described.

Critical review of recent development in fiber reinforced adobe bricks for sustainable construction

Mahgoub M. SALIH, Adelaja I. OSOFERO, Mohammed S. IMBABI

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 4,   Pages 839-854 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0630-7

Abstract: This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of research on the utilization of fibers (predominantly derived from waste materials) as reinforcement in adobe brick production. Recycling of these wastes provides sustainable construction materials and helps to protect the environment. Specimen preparation and test procedures are outlined. The effects of addition of these wastes on the physical and mechanical properties of adobe bricks as presented in the literature, are investigated. The main results for each additive are presented and discussed. It is concluded that improved adobe brick properties can be expected with the addition of combination of waste additives. The use of waste materials in the construction industry is generally of interest and useful for engineers and designers seeking sustainable solutions in construction. It is also of interest to researchers actively seeking to develop methodical approaches to quantifying, optimising and testing the performance in use of such waste material additives.

Recent development on statistical methods for personalized medicine discovery

Yingqi Zhao, Donglin Zeng

Frontiers of Medicine 2013, Volume 7, Issue 1,   Pages 102-110 doi: 10.1007/s11684-013-0245-7

Abstract:

It is well documented that patients can show significant heterogeneous responses to treatments so the best treatment strategies may require adaptation over individuals and time. Recently, a number of new statistical methods have been developed to tackle the important problem of estimating personalized treatment rules using single-stage or multiple-stage clinical data. In this paper, we provide an overview of these methods and list a number of challenges.

Recent development and application of thin-film thermoelectric cooler

Yuedong Yu, Wei Zhu, Xixia Kong, Yaling Wang, Pengcheng Zhu, Yuan Deng

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 4,   Pages 492-503 doi: 10.1007/s11705-019-1829-9

Abstract: Recently, the performance and fabrication of thin-film thermoelectric materials have been largely enhanced. Based on this enhancement, the thin-film thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is becoming a research hot topic, due to its high cooling flux and microchip level size. To fulfill a thin-film TEC, interfacial problems are unavoidable, as they may largely reduce the properties of a thin-film TEC. Moreover, the architecture of a thin-film TEC should also be properly designed. In this review, we introduced the enhancement of thermoelectric properties of (Bi,Sb) (Te,Se) solid solution materials by chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition and electrodeposition. Then, the interfacial problems, including contact resistance, interfacial diffusion and thermal contact resistance, were discussed. Furthermore, the design, fabrication, as well as the performance of thin-film TECs were summarized.
